„Walther Gropius‘ demand ‚Art and technology a new unity!‘ was particularly suited to the task field of home decor and contemporary lighting. Wilhelm Wagenfeld worked in the metal workshop of the Bauhaus and presented a table lamp with a dome made of Jena glass in 1924 – a legendary design, still popular today as the ‚Bauhaus lamp'“.

Lamps of the Modern Era / Glass Production in the Light of the Bauhaus

100 years ago, the Bauhaus was founded in Weimar. On the occasion of this anniversary, the LWL Industrial Museum displays modern lighting glass in a major exhibition for the first time. The range of the exhibition includes heat-resistant glass, Bauhaus’ ideas of form, Wilhelm Wagenfeld’s 1930s designs and the forms of the so-called New Objectivity. The rare lamps, oftentimes never displayed before, are accompanied by objects from museums and private collections as well as contemporary photographs, advertisements, catalogues and drafts.
The exhibition also offers something new: five contemporary designers have developed new interpretations of some Wagenfeld luminaires exclusively for the presentation at the LWL Industrial Museum, thus demonstrating the relevance of luminaire design for the present (Wagenfeld revisited). In addition, a mouth-blown replica of a Wagenfeld luminaire that has only survived as a draft can be seen.
This exhibition is part of the project “100 years of Bauhaus in the West”.
Leuchten der Moderne / Glasproduktion im Licht des Bauhauses

Vor 100 Jahren wurde in Weimar das Bauhaus gegründet. Anlässlich des Jubiläums stellt das LWL-Industriemuseum Beleuchtungsglas der Moderne erstmals in einer Überblicksausstellung vor. Sie schlägt einen Bogen vom hitzebeständigen Glas über die Formkonzepte des Bauhauses über Wilhelm Wagenfelds Entwürfe der 1930er Jahre bis zu den Formen der sogenannten Neuen Sachlichkeit. Die Präsentation der Leuchten – allesamt seltene, vielfach nie gezeigte Objekte aus Museen und Privatsammlungen – wird begleitet von zeitgenössischen Fotos, Werbematerial, Katalogen und Entwurfszeichnungen. Die Ausstellung bietet auch Neues: Fünf Designer der Gegenwart haben exklusiv für die Präsentation im LWL-Industriemuseum Neuinterpretationen einiger Wagenfeld-Leuchten entwickelt und zeigen damit die Relevanz der Leuchten-Gestaltung für die Gegenwart (Wagenfeld revisited). Zudem ist die mundgeblasene Replik einer nur noch als Entwurf erhaltenen Wagenfeld-Leuchte zu sehen.
Die Ausstellung ist Teil des Verbundprojektes „100 Jahre Bauhaus im Westen“.
