Based on the re-arrangement and combination of already existing products, the project and exhibition ‘[ DIE SAMMLUNG ] a collective structure’ explores how taking a critical look at private and public collections can affect the process of designing products. Most important tool of this research project is the Online Collection of the Museum of Applied Arts Vienna.

By means of rearranging, fragmenting and recontextualizing, new combinations and drafts come into being and discuss the appropriation, collectivization and continuation of the already existing: Design as assemblage, as collective and continuing authorship, as a form of sampling, as a cultural technique.

The exhibition ‘[ DIE SAMMLUNG ] a collective structure’ shows for the first time the results of the project “piling + adding” by designer Hanna Krüger which she planned for the Nespresso Design Scholarship. Based on the re-arrangement and combination of already existing products, the project explores how taking a critical look at private and public collections can affect the process of designing products. By means of rearranging, fragmenting and recontextualizing, new combinations and drafts come into being and discuss the appropriation, collectivization and continuation of the already existing: Design as assemblage, as collective and continuing authorship, as a form of sampling, as a cultural technique. The project particularly focuses on investigating the online collection of MAK – museum of applied arts Vienna. The unrestricted access renders the collection open, a freely accessible repository of knowledge: It becomes an infrastructure and a tool for designing. Digitizing the collection evokes the investigation of new notions and practices of artistic authorship. The project results in products which put forward their own dialogue with the collection of the MAK Vienna in particular as well as the notion of collection and accumulation in general. Who is an author? Is a collection actually a collective structure? Is it alright to serve oneself? Does something emerge out of it? And what does ‘something new’ mean in design?

Die Ausstellung ‘[ DIE SAMMLUNG ] a collective structure’ zeigt erstmalig die Ergebnisse des Projektes „Stapeln + Addieren“ der Designerin Hanna Krüger, das im Rahmen des Nespresso Design Scholarships entwickelt wurde. Auf der Grundlage der Neu(an-)ordnung und Kombination bereits vorhandener Produkte untersucht das Projekt, wie sich die Auseinandersetzung mit privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen auf die Gestaltung von Produkten auswirken kann. Mit dem Mittel der Neuordnung, Fragmentierung und Rekontextualisierung entstehen neue Zusammensetzungen und Entwürfe, welche die Aneignung, Kollektivierung und Weiterführung von Bestehendem und Vorangegangenem thematisieren: Design als Assemblage, als kollektive und fortlaufende AutorInnenschaft, als eine Form des Samplens, als Kulturtechnik. Ein Hauptaugenmerk des Projektes liegt auf der Auseinandersetzung mit der Online-Sammlung (WW) des MAK Wien. Der ungehinderte Zugriff macht die Sammlung plötzlich zu einem offenen, frei zugänglichen Wissensspeicher: sie wird zur Infrastruktur und zum Entwurfswerkzeug. Die Digitalisierung der Museumssammlung evoziert die Auseinandersetzung mit neuen Auffassungen und Praktiken von künstlerischer AutorInnenschaft. Am Ende stehen Produkte, welche einen ganz eigenen Dialog mit der konkreten Sammlung des MAK Wien sowie der „(An)-Sammlung“ im Allgemeinen formulieren und aufzeigen. Was ist ein Autor/eine Autorin? Ist die „Sammlung“ eigentlich eine kollektive Struktur? Darf man sich Ihrer bedienen? Bildet sich darüber Neues? Und was ist etwas Neues im Design?
